Don Marvin Introductions

Partridge Hill Gardens is proud to introduce the Introductions of
Don Marvin, of  Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, which will extend
your daylily season from Extra-Early  to Very Late. Don joined AHS
in 1950 and began hybridizing diploids in 1955, but soon after
developed a passion for tetraploids, intrigued by their brilliant colors,
 sturdiness and hardiness. Some of his earlier introductions were the
BERMUDA  CORAL (1986), EDGERLY(1988), ELFIN ROYALTY(1986),
ME FIRST (1992), QUAKER GOWN (1982), SNOW GLITTER (1992),
and STIPPLED VELVET (1988).

Now, we have the pleasure and honor to introduce you
to the latest of Don’s introductions.

PROM FLOWER (Marvin, Don ‘05)

[Byzantine Mask x (Paper Butterfly x
Sdlg)] Extra early rebloomer,
Dormant, tetraploid, 28” tall, 5.5”

A warm violet with a purple eyezone
and dark violet sepals above a yellow
to green throat, 3 way branching with
14 buds per scape, diurnal and fertile
both ways. PROM FLOWER blooms
with the extra early yellow and golds,
providing a nice contrast. This hardy,
dormant has a long bloom season !

AUGUST CHERRY (Marvin, Don ’05)

[(September Blaze x Tahitian Sunrise) x John Jacob] Late bloomer, Dormant, Tetraploid, 28” tall, 5”

Cherry rose self, with a white edge above a green throat, 3 way branching with 17 buds per scape, diurnal and fertile both ways. Just as the late season begins, so does the happy AUGUST CHERRY, a most heartwarming flower. It comes from three northern tetraploids – all lates – and should be a welcome addition to your garden and a great breeder for Late green throated reds. $35 DF

HAZY AUGUST SKY (Marvin, Don ’04)

(Sdlg. X Snow Blush) Late bloomer, Dormant, Tetraploid, 26” tall, 6”

Pale bluish lavender blend above a cream to green throat, 3 way branching with 14 buds per scape, diurnal and fertile both ways. HAZY AUGUST SKY is the palest lavender blue. This daylily will provide coolness to the late garden. It may help in breeding towards true light blue. It is shades lighter and bluer that PEWTER LAKE (Moldovan, S. ’86).

LORD OF AUTUMN (Marvin, Don ’05)

[(Harvest Hue x Bruce) x (Malihini x Sdlg.)] Very Late Bloomer, Dormant, Tetraploid, 48” tall, 8”

Hot rose-bronze with a matching gold midrib and broad gold edge above a yellow throat, 4 way branching with 20 buds per scape, fertile both ways. LORD OF AUTUMN is a sturdy, eye catching daylily of large proportions in a autumn blend of rose, red-brown and gold that blooms with SANDRA ELIZABETH. It’s bred from all northern parents, totally hardy and should throw great Very Late Tets. LORD OF AUTUMN’s gold edge is not temperature dependent. $35 DF
